Behind Flavor File

Hi, I’m Mia Oku!

Mia Oku, creator of Mia’s Flavor File

Mia’s Flavor File began as a way for me to collect the meals my husband and I love, so I could easily return to them whenever I needed inspiration or forgot what I did the first time. Let’s be honest, sometimes a meal comes out amazing, and then you can’t remember a single thing you added!

Now, I’m excited to share those recipes and ideas with you. Whether you are brand new to cooking and need beginner-friendly guidance, or you are an experienced cook looking for fresh inspiration, welcome to my page.

Mia’s Flavor File will continue to grow as my husband and I try new meals, discover new flavors, and create memories in our home. Have an idea, a suggestion, or simply want to chat? Feel free to send me a message.

I’m so excited for the food journey we’ll be taking together. And remember, the secret ingredients are always love and Adobo 😉

What you need

  • Trader Joe’s frozen shu mai
  • Olive oil, avocado oil, or oil spray
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • ¾ tsp gochujang paste
  • Optional: sesame seeds

Cooking timeline

  1. 0:00
    Preheat

Preheat the air fryer to 390°F for about 3 minutes.

  2. 0:03
    Oil + arrange

Lightly oil the basket and the bottoms and sides of the frozen shu mai. Arrange flat-side down in one layer with space between them.

  3. 0:04
    Start crisping

    Air fry for 6 minutes.

  4. 0:10
    Flip + finish

Flip each shu mai and air fry another 4–6 minutes, until the bottoms are golden and the edges look blistered.

  5. 0:14
    Make spicy mayo

Mix the mayonnaise and gochujang. Leave it thick for dipping, or stir in a tiny, tiny splash of water to thin it for drizzling. Serve with optional sesame seeds.

Trust Me on This: Place them flat-side down and do not stack them. They hate that. The flip is where the crunch happens.
